Preventive Wellness Degree Overview

With a Bachelor of Science Degree in Nutrition – Preventive Wellness Track from ÂÒÂ×ÊÓÆµ, you might work as a public health nutritionist in government agencies dedicated to improving the nutritional health of various groups, such as pregnant women, infants, young children or the elderly. This program may suit you if you want to focus on nutrition but are not interested in becoming a registered dietitian. 

You might also provide education and counseling to healthy people of all ages desiring to improve their overall nutritional health and wellness. You may go into business for yourself, providing nutrition education to individuals and groups or you may find yourself suited to a management position in commercial and institutional food service.

Preventive Wellness Courses You May Take

Introductory Nutrition: Introduction to nutrition including functions, sources, characteristics, and recommended intake of nutrients; digestion, absorption and metabolism; special needs during various phases of the life cycle; diet therapy and patient assessment, education and counseling.

Culinary Nutrition: This course explores the principles of culinary nutrition and their applications in the kitchen. Students will learn about the nutritional value of foods, dietary guidelines, and how to prepare nutritious meals.

Nutrition and Fitness: An overview of contemporary nutrition concepts, including healthy eating, nutrition attitudes and behaviors; myths and realities of weight control; vegetarianism; food intolerances; dietary supplements; food safety; and nutrition and health maintenance for adults. This course is designed to help students become better-informed consumers of nutrition-related information.

Advanced Nutrition: The advanced study of normal nutrition including digestion, absorption, and metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, vitamins and minerals.

Community Nutrition: Activities and responsibilities of the community nutritionist including needs assessment, program development, communication, identifying public policy issues and working with the media. Students apply principles of nutrition education in a variety of community settings.
